Peggy’s Week in Paradise: An Adventure in Anguilla

My cousin Peggy came to visit me in Anguilla. She arrived late on a Sunday afternoon. We dropped off her bag at the house and took her first picture in Anguilla.

Then we drove to the Dune Preserve on Rendezvous Bay to enjoy Bankie Banks Sunday School. This was the perfect way to begin Peggy’s Week in Paradise.

The next morning, we decided to try snorkling on the beach at Forest Bay. The beach is sheltered by reefs, so the sea was very calm; perfect for snorkling. We saw at least six different types of fish. I swam with a school of silvery fish for a little while. They seemed totally unbothered by my presence.

After snorkling, Peggy and I walked along the shore to the where the reef touched land.

We had lunch at Zack’s Shwarma. Delicious Lebanese food.

In the afternoon, we drove clear to the west end of island to see the Anguilla Arch.

The West End coast is rugged and wild.

The next day, we went to The Fountain Cavern National Park. The Fountain is a large, underground cavern that holds two fresh-water pools that provided the population with water in the past. Fifty years ago, when I first visited Anguilla, it was possible to go down into the cavern; and I did. But it is now barred for safety and to preserve the art created by the original indigenous inhabitants of the island.

After our adventure at The Fountain Cavern, we went down the hill to Gwen’s Reggae Grill on Shoal Bay East for lunch and a swim. The shrimp salad was delicious. (But the sauce is a secret!)

The waves were a bit rough, but we ventured out anyway. When we weren’t watching, a big wave whacked us flat into the water and the sand. It was fun, but, boy, were we coated in sand!!

That was enough adventuring for that day!

The next day we went to Ken’s BBQ for lunch and had the best ribs in town, in my opinion.

After lunch, we drove to the west end to have dessert at Island Crave Ice Cream. YUM!

Our next outing was to Anguilla Sands and Salts to taste-test Joh’s salts and chocolates and buy some of his delicious products.

All the products are delicious, but my favorites are the ginger and the spice dark chocolate bars.

That night we drove back to the west end to eat dinner at Picante Mexican restaurant.

We shared tortilla soup and a shrimp burrito so that we would have room for dessert: Mexican chocolate pudding for me and flan for Peggy.

On Peggy’s last day in Paradise, we drove to Mead’s Bay. The surf was very rough, but beautiful and exciting to watch.

Since we wanted to have another swim, we went across the island to Rendezvous Bay where we had lunch at Coconuts Beach Bar at Anguilla Great House resort. The sea was much calmer there.

The seas were very calm, especially compared to Mead’s Bay, so we went for a swim after lunch. Pro Tip: if it’s too windy to swim on one side of the island, try the other side!

And thus ended Peggy’s Week in Paradise. She flew out later that afternoon. Peggy and I had many Adventures in Anguilla. What will be my next adventure?

It was so much fun! Every day was a new delight! Next time we’ll get to snorkel in Little bay, I hope!
